About Anthiyur — Heritage & Nature Hub

Nestled at the foothills of the Western Ghats in Erode district, Anthiyur bridges centuries of Kongu heritage, agrarian richness, and mountain eco-tourism.

Strategic Heart of Northern Kongu Nadu

Anthiyur is a vibrant taluk and town panchayat situated in the northern corner of Erode District, Tamil Nadu. Positioned gracefully between the Kaveri river basin and the rugged forest slopes of the Bargur Hills and Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, Anthiyur enjoys a prime geographical vantage point.

The town is situated just 28 km north of Gobichettipalayam, 24 km from Bhavani, 48 km from Erode city, and 85 km southwest of Salem. It acts as the primary gateway for travellers venturing into the Bargur Ghats, Thamaraikarai, and onward towards the border town of Kollegal and Mysore in Karnataka.

600+ Years of Glorious History

Anthiyur has an illustrious history spanning back to the medieval Pandya and Kongu Chola dynasties. Inscriptions recovered around the Sri Gurunathaswamy Temple at Pudupalayam feature royal fish crests indicative of Pandya patronage. Historically, Anthiyur served as a vital transit and defense outpost connecting the Mysore Kingdom with the fertile Cauvery delta of Kongu Nadu. Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali maintained cavalry outposts nearby, which helped spur the famous equine trading traditions that thrive to this day.

The Indigenous Bargur Cattle Breed

Anthiyur's surrounding Bargur Hills are the proud native breeding tract for the recognized indigenous Bargur Cattle (locally known as Semmarai). Characterized by their compact, agile frame, reddish-brown coat with white markings, and exceptional stamina for hill-climbing, they represent one of Tamil Nadu's most cherished livestock legacies.
